Tips on the art of writing: Part 2

Tips on the art of writing: Part 2

  • Pay attention to the meaning of the pronoun your, which can be for the second person singular or for the second person plural. Not being precise can ruin the quality of the text.
  • The gerund is a delicate verbal derivative. Think about everything you know about it, and if you’re not sure whether you’re using it correctly, use other verb forms instead.
  • It’s trendy to write without using punctuation. Certain authors adopt this unorthodox practice on purpose, even though many people can’t well understand what they write. Use punctuation in your writing.
  • Correct punctuation helps you avoid all kinds of divergences when it comes to the interpretation of the text.
  • Don’t look down on diacritics, even though you may hear people claim they are unnecessary. Until the time comes when they are no longer required, use them correctly.
  • Avoid using pretentious, obscure and incomprehensible words. If you can use two synonyms, always choose the shorter and most well-known one. You don’t need to say oblation if you can say offering.
  • The use of foreign words is only justified when we don’t have an equivalent word in our own language.
  • Not all neologisms deserve free rein in languages. Be careful when using them. Ask yourself whether you really need them, and let the experts renovate the language.
  • In 99% of cases, repetition of sounds is unpleasant to the ear: avoid it.
  • In some languages, you have the freedom to choose the order of the words in a sentence. However, some wording may sound forced. Use whatever sounds more natural.
