Tips on the art of writing: part 3

  • Don’t imitate any styles, even if some might seem wonderful. Try to create your own style, and know that this can only be done if you’re honest with yourself. Everyone is different, and if what you say or write agrees with your personality, then it will be original and won’t be similar to what’s written by anyone else.
  • If you write for others to understand you, write clearly, with simple wording that is as concise as possible.
  • Avoid commonplaces and clichés. If you quote something, put it in quotation marks and mention the author.
  • Read and reread what you wrote before you submit it. You might find something that you need to correct.
  • Following the previous rule, don’t be too much of a perfectionist, like the people who change each sentence 20 times and are never happy with it. Being too critical can harm and even ruin many authors’ works.
  • Lastly, get rid of any inferiority complex you may have! We all have a right to express ourselves, especially if it’s a good idea and it’s written correctly.
