Implementation-Facilitation
A. Motivation
Display the community map that the class created. Ask how to get to the police station (one of the landmarks drawn on the map). Elicit responses such as "turn right" and "cross Fresh Pond Road." Remind the class that we will take a walking tour of Ridgewood to photograph the landmarks on our map.
B. Method
1. Motivation
2. Ask the students what they need will need to take with them on the walking tour. Write their responses on the blackboard.
2. Have the students gather the items that they listed on the blackboard. Tell them about the importance of preparing and of making a checklist.
3. Designate various students as the guides. They will lead the class to the landmarks.
4. Assign a team of students to take pictures of the landmarks. Students can assess the quality of each picture after it is taken.
5. Assign a team of students to assess the photographs taken. They will assess the photographs immediately after the photograph is take, so the photographer can re-take the photograph if necessary. This assessment team should state what is wrong with the picture and how to correct it (for example: "The sign of the senior center isn't in the picture. People won't know what it is.").
(note: switch the roles of the three groups of students throughout the tour.)
SOME EXAMPLES MAY FROM THE TRIP ARE:
The corner deli where everyone stops before school. These are the typical houses of Ridgewood. The YMCA, where many students go for pre-K. Our school, P. S. 88
