Lesson 4: Drawing A Map Of Our Community

Aim: We will use the facts we knew and the new facts we learned about the community to draw a map of our community

Implementation-Facilitation

A. Motivation
1. Before beginning to draw maps the class will review vocabulary words.
a. Community, Senior Center, Businesses, Police Station, Apartment Buildings
2. Before beginning to draw maps the class will review the facts about our community from the KWL chart.
3. The class will break up into groups of four students per group to brainstorm ideas for drawing our maps.

B. Method

***SECTIONS 4 AND 5 ARE A Review***

4. The teacher will ask the students to review what the word "community" means.
5. The teacher will ask various students to reread the facts about our community from the KWL chart.

***INCORPORATE MATH INTO THE CREATION OF THE MAP***

6. Next, the students will begin their maps by drawing the streets.
a. Have students use rulers to measure the streets
b. Discuss that the main roads are larger than the side roads.
c. Decide what form of measurement you would like to use (i.e. inches or cm).
7. After all the streets are in place the students will correctly label them by name.
a. To help with this section, the teacher may decide to use the street names that are placed on the map as the students spelling words the week before so that they are familiar with them.
8. Then the students will place all the important places in our community in the appropriate place using our school as the center of focus.
9. After all the important places are labeled the students will be able to add their own homes to their maps.

Grouping

1. The students will begin the lesson working as a whole class to review the previous lessons.
2. Then the students will be broken up into groups of four students to complete maps on paper.

Student Activities

1. The students will review previous lessons.
2. The students will work in small groups to make maps using long butcher paper.

1. The students will use the information they have learned thus far to create a map.
2. The students will use the web with the important places and people to draw our maps.
3. The students will receive verbal praise for their contribution to creating the group maps.

Evaluation
1. Measurement of the students ability to create a map in proportion and the correct placement of homes and businesses.
