One of the biggest decisions students have to make is to decide which high school to select. It is a decision that makes many students anxious and brings some to tears. The purpose of this unit is to assist students in this difficult process and teach them how to create web pages at the same time. They will be doing research as they create their web pages and hopefully some of the anxiety of this difficult process will be removed. My students enjoyed this unit, I hope your students will too.

The following links will assist your students in this process:
http://www.insideschools.org/
- Inside Schools Organization, which is an independent guide to New York
City schools. It provides a quick profile, along with detailed information and a
downside, which all schools have.
http://www.eschoolprofile.com/city/newyork.asp? - Eschool profile
provides reports for public and private high schools. This service is a bit
commercialized.
http://www.altschools.org/schools/ - Alternative schools and programs
provides a list of all these schools and programs as well as links to their
websites.
http://www.greatschools.net/modperl/go/NY - Great School Network is a
guide for K-12 which provides information on test scores, teacher experience,
demographics and more for schools. You can also compare schools and look at
standardized test results.
http://personal.zcloud.net/easysurf/ring/webh.htm - New York City Public
Schools Web Ring which provides a centralized listing for public school
websites.
NOTE: This unit can be adapted for high school seniors going through the college selection process by changing the links that are appropriate to college and university profiling. Teachers from areas other than NYC can adapt this unit by substituting links to schools in their area. Some of the links to organizations are national, e.g. Great Schools.Net and Eschool Profile.
