- Metaphor: direct comparison of two objects
- Simile: indirect comparison of two objects
- Symbol: a relationship between two elements, one concrete and sensorial and the other abstract, in a way that the concrete element reveals the abstract element
- Emblem: a symbol used frequently (cross = Christianity; rose = beauty)
- Image: the expression of an object or a sensorial experience (visual, tactile, auditory, etc.)
- Personification: comparison of an object to an animal or person
- Antithesis or contrast: contraposition of concepts (“my brown white heat”, “living death”)
- Climax or intensity: a chain of thoughts that follow an ascendant or descendant progression
- Figures of speech:
- Alliteration: repetition of consonants (consonant sounds)
- Assonance: repetition of vowels (vowel sounds)
- Anaphora: repetition of words at the beginning of verses
- Hyperbaton: inversion of the natural order (the common order) of words in a sentence.
