  1. Figures of thought:
    1. Metaphor: direct comparison of two objects
    2. Simile: indirect comparison of two objects
    3. Symbol: a relationship between two elements, one concrete and sensorial and the other abstract, in a way that the concrete element reveals the abstract element
    4. Emblem: a symbol used frequently (cross = Christianity; rose = beauty)
    5. Image: the expression of an object or a sensorial experience (visual, tactile, auditory, etc.)
    6. Personification: comparison of an object to an animal or person
    7. Antithesis or contrast: contraposition of concepts (“my brown white heat”, “living death”)
    8. Climax or intensity: a chain of thoughts that follow an ascendant or descendant progression
  2. Figures of speech:
    1. Alliteration: repetition of consonants (consonant sounds)
    2. Assonance: repetition of vowels (vowel sounds)
    3. Anaphora: repetition of words at the beginning of verses
    4. Hyperbaton: inversion of the natural order (the common order) of words in a sentence.
