Avoid over-correcting

Avoid over-correcting

September 28, 2015 teacherlab 0 2120

Over-correcting means modifying phrases, sentences or paragraphs that are already correct from a grammatical and stylistic point of view. Of course that the copy editor, thanks to his professional specialization and vast experience, will easily find other alternatives, sometimes more elegant or that use better wording; however, we advise to avoid filling the document with unnecessary corrections, to ensure that the editorial process goes smoothly and also to respect the effort of the author and the editor.

This task requires great caution from the copy editor, as he must avoid making an excessive intervention. When he is firmly convinced that something that is perfectly correct could be improved, he will make a suggestion using a pencil of a different color, and will mention very clearly that the said correction is not absolutely necessary. This suggestion is later reviewed for approval by the editor and the author. Such suggestions should occur as rarely as possible.
